The United Kingdom and the United States have reached a major trade agreement that will guarantee no import taxes on British medicine shipments going into the American market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to increase spending on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This commitment guarantees that tariffs on these vital exports will stay at zero for a duration of the next three years.

This deal follows earlier statements to hike import taxes on patented drug imports, with figures floated up to one hundred percent.

"This deal between the Britain reinforces the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and establishes long-overdue fairness to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," an announcement declared.

Economic Significance

Drugs are one of the the United Kingdom's biggest goods shipped to the America, which is clearly the largest market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data show that in the year leading up to the third quarter, the UK exported drugs totaling billions to the US. This figure represented nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that period.

"This deal protects jobs, increases capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for medical research," a minister remarked.

Detailed British Pledges

The agreement includes several specific changes from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to double overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. Last year, rebates exceeded 20%.

Industry Background

The pact takes place against a ongoing tension between the sector and the ministers over medicine costs and NHS adoption.

This friction were exacerbated by arguments that American consumers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while substantial expansions have been announced toward projects in the United States.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
